Leveraging your Human Advantage for the AI age

The fact is that the ability to create new explanations is the unique, morally and intellectually significant functionality of people . Thinking of an AGI as a machine for translating experiences, rewards and punishments into ideas (or worse, just into behaviours) is futile. If one works towards programs whose 'thinking' is constitutionally incapable of violating predetermined constraints, one is trying to engineer away the defining attribute of an intelligent being, of a person: namely creativity.”

- David Deutsch

AI by its very nature involves pattern recognition. What AI currently lacks is the ability to make creative leaps that only humans can make.

AI lowers the barriers for each of us to tap and evolve our own levels of creativity. With 35+ years of experience working with people in companies large and small, across, product, service, and innovation, I’ve continually come across 4 primary strengths, below represented as archetypes, that represent areas where our own creativity

The Catalyst

The Power of Acceleration

Primary Driver: Progress, Speed, Growth, and Impact

POV on AI: AI is a Force Multiplier.

The Moat: Visionary Audacity. AI is trained on the past; the Catalyst is obsessed with a future as novel opportunity.

The Advantage:

The Catalyst shatters inertia. You possess the rare combination of high-velocity energy and the audacity to "see the gap" before AI even knows it exists.

You provide the audacity and will to drag a team from "0 to 1."

You don't just participate in the market; you force it to evolve. While AI excels at optimizing the status quo, you exist to disrupt it.

Your superpower is Breaking Inertia. You live in the future, sensing where the world is going, and you use your sheer will to drag the present moment toward that vision.

You are the spark that pushes a great idea into a movement.

The Example:

Think of Richard Branson. He didn’t enter the airline or music industries to incrementally improve them; he entered to disrupt them.

His genius was the velocity of his vision—he moved faster than the "gravity" of the established players.

He didn't get bogged down in how things should work; he used his energy to prove how they could work.

Your Creativity Edge:

AI operates on historical data; it can only predict what is likely to happen based on what has already happened. You operate on Vision.

You have the ability to see a reality that data cannot yet justify. You are the engine of "0 to 1."

You provide the initial thrust that allows a team or a company to escape the gravity of "business as usual" and you excel and understanding and marshalling the talent needed to make it happen.

The Shadow Side:

Your blind spot is "burning out the transmission." You live in Intuitive Time—where the vision is already real and finished in your mind.

Your team lives in Linear Time—where they must physically build the bridge brick by brick.

Because you are already at the finish line mentally, the team’s actual progress feels excruciatingly slow to you. This causes you to push too hard, creating a chaotic wake where people are exhausted, confused, and left behind.

You may also be the collateral damage in that scenario. You risk breaking the very machine you are trying to drive.

Your Opportunity:

Your next level of growth is Torque Conversion. You must accept that your speed is a raw resource that needs to be translated before it hits the wheels.

You need Throttle Control (slowing down personally to let the team breathe) and, most importantly, you must Delegate the Sequencing.

Stop trying to force the pace yourself. Partner with a strong Operator or Integrator who can take your massive, non-linear vision and break it into digestible, linear steps for the team.

This allows you to stay at the strategic level where you belong, without crushing the people, and yourself, into the ground. You may also benefit from a good Alchemist as a partner.

The Architect

The Power of Elegant Design

Primary Driver: Structure, Agility, and Scale

POV on AI: AI is a Tool for Efficiency.

The Moat: Systems Thinking. AI can follow a process; the Architect creates the process that AI follows.

The Advantage:

While AI generates content, the Architect builds the infrastructure that makes content profitable.

You see the organizational blueprint and the scaling strategy before the first tool is ever turned on. You see the blueprint before the building is built.

Your superpower is turning chaos into order while building the system that allows your company to scale.

While others get lost in the buzz, you are focused on building the platform for success.

The Example:

Think of Tim Cook, whose genius wasn't just the product itself, but the massive operational architecture he built to produce it at scale.

Your Creativity Edge:

AI is fundamentally derivative. You are the creativity above the tools.

You see what the system needs to evolve into before anyone is asking the question of what needs to change.

The Shadow Side:

Your blind spot might be believing the system itself can solve for all problems. You may be ignoring the larer human system in which you and the company swim.

Your Opportunity:

Your next level of growth might be in mastering the ability to step back from the system, see the larger picture, and begin to solve for the how the human system in your company works first, Including your own human system, before tweaking the digital one.

The Synthesizer

The Power of Innovation

Primary Driver: Discovery, Pattern Recognition, Synthesis and Creating New Value

POV on AI: AI is a Platform for Acceleration.

The Moat: Lateral Thinking. AI predicts the most likely next word; the Synthesizer finds the value in the sum of novel connections.

The Advantage:

The Synthesizer is a master of lateral thinking. You are capable of connecting the dots across technology, systems, human behavior, and culture find novel value in non-obvious ways.

You don't just make things incrementally better, you see the leaps that others may not see.

You have the ability to see what's greater than the sum of its parts and how that creates relevant human value.

The Example:

Think of Howard Schultz. He didn't invent coffee, and he didn't invent the cafe.

His genius was synthesizing the romance of an Italian espresso bar with the comfort of an American living room to create a 'Third Place' that was greater than the sum of its ingredients."

Your Creativity Edge:

AI provides a platform for you to move faster than before.

You're ability to take your ideas, create test and learn enables you to scale your creativity across more ideas to arrive at solutions that deliver real value.

The Shadow Side:

Your blind spot might be "pushing a bad bet"

You may fall in love with one innovation so much that you stop recognizing the signal, or stop seeking it enough to know you're on the wrong track and need to go in another direction.

Your Opportunity:

Your next level of growth might be greater discernment and follow through.

You possess an ability to connect dots, and it's also important to listen to the signal that's coming through, and commit to finishing what you started that has enough promise.

Remember to take a step back. Get real feedback from real people. Ditch anything that looks like vanity metrics and learn to take guidance from your head, heart, and gut as you chart a path forward, and find a way to bring things to reality.

The Alchemist

The Power of Human Truth

Primary Driver: Connection, Resonance, Advocacy, & Alignment.

POV on AI: AI is a Data Processor (but lacks context).

The Moat: Emotional Intelligence (EQ). AI has no nervous system; it cannot feel the "vibe" of a high-stakes negotiation.

The Advantage:

You sense the invisible data that spreadsheets miss. While AI sees metrics and KPIs, you see the human nervous system that drives them.

Your superpower is Alignment. You understand that your own emotions are a finely tuned instrument—offering you wisdom and strategic signals—and you view the emotions of others not as obstacles, but as critical data.

You don't just execute strategy; you act as the glue that holds it together, translating "felt" reality into business logic the entire organization can understand.

The Example:

Think of Oprah Winfrey. She didn't just interview people; she acted as a conduit for human truth and built a multi-million dollar empire on top of that.

Her genius was using her own emotional instrument to sense the temperature of a room (or a nation) and translating that feeling into a business relevant enough to drive a global movement.

She didn't fix her audience; she held up a million mirrors so clear that they could feel seen, heard, and empowered.

Your Creativity Edge:

AI has no nervous system; it cannot feel the "vibe" of a deal or the fear in a culture. You are a Strategic Sensor.

You operate with the understanding that every emotion carries wisdom for the person feeling it. You don't fight the emotional weather; you read it.

You have the unique ability to name the "elephant in the room"—illuminating the hidden friction so the group can finally navigate reality and get moving forward rather than stumbling in the dark.

The Shadow Side:

Your blind spot may be the "Duty to Fix." Because you might sense misalignment so acutely, you may often feel a personal responsibility to harmonize the room immediately.

This can lead to Boundary Collapse, where you might absorb the team's stress and try to do their emotional homework for them.

If you rush to "fix" the discomfort, you risk becoming an emotional shock absorber - depleted, heavy, and exhausted—while simultaneously robbing your team of the wisdom hidden in their own struggle.

Your Opportunity:

Your next level of growth is Reflection, not Absorption. You are a Conduit, not a Sponge.

Your job is not to carry the heavy energy, but to let it pass through you, grounding it out so you remain clear.

Instead of fixing the feeling, get curious about it. Hold up the mirror.

When you translate the emotion into language the group can understand, you don't just create safety—you create the clarity necessary for action.
